Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatment methods of zirconia ceramics on the shear bond strength of ceramic brackets. Fifty glazed zirconia ceramic specimens (10 mm 10 mm 3 mm) were prepared and divided into 5 groups (n=10). Zirconia ceramics were randomly assigned to the following groups according to surface treatment: No surface treatment group (CON), 50 sandblasting group (50A), 110 sandblasting group (110A), 30 silica coating and silane group (30S), 110 silica coating and silane group (110S). Ceramic brackets were bonded to conditioned zirconia ceramics with a light-polymerized resin composite cement. Surface roughnesses of treated specimens was measured by 3D digital microscope. The interfaces between zirconia ceramics and ceramic brackets were observed by SEM. Shear bond strength values were measured on a universal testing machine. The zirconia ceramic surfaces were examined with a microscope to determine the amount of composite resin remaining using the modified Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI). The 110 silica coating and silane application group yielded the highest shear bond strength. This was followed by 30 silica coating and silane application group, 110 sandblasting group, 50 sandblasting group, no treatment group. The modified Adhesive Remnant Index results, that is the residual adhesive increased on the zirconia ceramics as the bonding strength increased.
